Chairman’s Report 2011

At the beginning of the year we moved from Addenbrooke’s to the Cambridge Cancer Help Center [CCHC] at Scotdales. Better parking [free] and a purpose built facilities along with a cosier comfortable atmosphere were strong reasons for this move. On the whole it has been a success. Having to change our day and date as well was particularly challenging.

We have had two notable speakers – Professor Rob Thomas and Dr Yvonne Rimmer. The former was talking about living with cancer and although it was an audience associated with Prostate Cancer and tailored to us it would be useful advice to many other types of cancer. Mainly about diet and exercise it was very practical as you are the person responsible for both these aspects of your lives and I think there is convincing evidence that they do make a difference.

The latter gave a talk on ‘image guided radiotherapy’ which we had donated a large sum of money towards. £5k towards the refurbishment of the ‘James Watson Suite’. We also donated £5k towards an ultrasound guided probe for use in the diagnosis of Prostate Cancer in Urology. Thus carrying on the tradition of one donation to Oncology and an equal one to Urology.

For ourselves, (although I wouldn’t describe it as such), a projector was purchased for the princely sum of £90, thanks to Tim who I watched do the bidding on ebay. We also got a brand new bulb worth £200-300 thrown in.

We received a large number of donations Quattro Coffee [£330 + £58.89] was a popular one with most of the committee in attendance. £335 raised by Ann Bullard, Roger Campbell {70th birthday} £428.20, Northern Soul £500 [in memory of Dennis Maxted], Frank Bird £250 [immortalised as the jam man]. John Goddard [in memorium] £470.16.

The chairman apart from the normal duties of attending meetings and arranging the venues went to Leicester for a Cancer Federation seminar titled ‘Lifestyle and Prostate Cancer’. He was supposed to go to the Federation AGM in Manchester but got sick instead. Attended a two day ‘living well’ course at the Penny Brohn in Bristol.

Fund raising events were arranged at RAF Honnington, Royston Probus and also an attendance at the Nuffield Surgery “open day” but as nobody could attend these functions we didn’t get any money or publicity.
The Chairman will be attending a fish and chip supper tomorrow (27th Jan 2012) where a donation of £770 will be given to us.

We have had several resignations/retirements/stepdowns: Sylvia Bates as secretary, (Carole Alderton has stepped into the brink fortunately). Jane Winney and Vernon and Margaret Speed who have been doing a sterling job with teas and coffees. We now have Jenny Brown who has been our treasurer since almost the beginning retiring. Tim O’Malley has volunteered to step in as this is a position that cannot go unfilled (he is also our webmaster). Tony Hall is staying on the committee but no longer wants to be Vice Chairman. John Cullin has stepped up to the challenge and is also on the committee.

We need more people on the committee with time and thought to give to a very worthwhile organisation. We are the only patient led Prostate Cancer Support in Cambridgeshire and there are an awful lot of men out there who need some help.

This report was submitted by the Chairman at the AGM on 26th January 2012.

[-------------------------------------------------------------]

We have a new speaker who would like to come and talk to us about cancer in April 2011.

See the diary page for info.

Locations:
In the past, we have held meetings in a number of places, depending on the best location for when we have guest speakers and/or the availability of meeting rooms. More recently, we have been holding meetings at The Cambridge Cancer Help Centre at Scotsdales Garden Centre, the address of which is:

David Rayner Building, 120 Cambridge Road, Great Shelford CB22 5JT (within the grounds of the Scotsdales Garden Centre).

How to get to CCHC (opens in new window)

When CCHC is not available, then we hold meetings at:

Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 0QQ,

in one of the following locations:

- Boardroom
Enter the hospital at the “Main Entrance” and turn left at reception. The Boardroom is about 20 yards along the corridor on your right.

- William Harvey Lecture Theatre
The main entrance to the Clinical School is at the west end of the building (near the letter ‘C’ & ‘S’ of Clinical School on this map).
Upon entering the building proceed through Reception and go round the stairs and straight ahead through the doors. For the William Harvey Lecture Theatre, take the doors on the left.

Parking
Parking at CCHC is free and there is usually plenty of space – the Centre is on the left hand side, as you enter Scotsdales from the road.

Our meetings are held in the evenings, at which time the main multi-storey car park at Addenbrooke’s has plenty of space. However, parking charges *DO* apply if you use this.

Please note: The Park & Ride service, that runs from either Babraham P&R or the City Centre to Addenbrooke’s has stopped running by the time our meetings finish (usually just after 9pm).

We’re in the process of adding some case histories of men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, so they can tell their own story of what has happened to them since they were made aware of their condition.

These can provide an insight into what happens after a diagnosis is made and so they can help to prepare anyone else with some useful background information as to what certain types of treatment are like, and of course it will go to show that, in the vast majority of cases, prostate cancer can be treated successfully, such that you can lead a normal life afterwards.

If you wish to submit your case history, then please feel free to get in touch with us. (edit: an email address will be added here soon).

What is Cancer?

When we have a group of cells growing out of control, they form a tumour. A tumour is simply a lump of abnormal cells which are multiplying when they shouldn’t. Cancer is the presence of a tumour.

Tumours can cause a number of problems:
•	They can spread to normal body tissues nearby.
•	They can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymphatic systems.
•	They can put physical pressure on other body structures.

As there are about two hundred types of cells in our bodies, there are about two hundred different types of cancer.

Left untreated, tumours which spread have the potential to cause death.

A normal human body contains many trillions of cells – estimates vary between about ten and a hundred trillion. Considering that we all started out as a single cell, that is amazing.

Cells multiply by dividing in two to double their number. By the time we are born, we are made of somewhere in the region of a trillion cells – all formed from one cell in the nine months between conception and birth. We continue to grow and our cells continue to divide up to about 18 years of age; then they stop. If they didn’t, we would continue to grow throughout adulthood and we would all be giants. Our genes contain a mechanism to prevent further cell division and stop us growing indefinitely.

In cancer, something has happened to disable this mechanism, so the affected cell grows and divides out of control. This is how tumours form. Because the cells of the tumour are our own body cells, they are not seen as invaders by our immune systems and so are allowed to proliferate, unchecked.

Factors which can cause a cell to reproduce in this manner include “carcinogenic” chemicals such as asbestos, some of the constituents of cigarette smoke and benzene. Other factors include some viruses (eg HPV, responsible for many cervical cancers) and exposure to radioactivity. Sometimes, the changes happen spontaneously with age. One person in every three will have some form of cancer at some stage of their life.
