Diary dates

Diary Dates:

Pre-Covid, we used to hold regular monthly meetings, usually on the fourth Thursday of each month, either for social gatherings or when we had a special guest speaker.

Now, it is 2024, and some things have changed – and we are now holding support meetings in 2024 (see below for the details) and we considered which days of the week and what times were the most appropriate for people to attend. And of course realising that many people work or have other commitments.

Meetings are now arranged for the early afternoon of the FIRST Saturday of EACH month.

So, please come along if you need some help or support dealing with the issues surrounding Prostate cancer and hopefully the group will increase its membership to pre-pandemic levels and this will give us a good foundation on which to build !.

In general:
Anyone is welcome to attend – there’s no fee or admission charge – just come along and see if we can help you.

We usually try to arrange to have guest speakers attend to give a short talk about Prostate Cancer, its treatment and about the hospitals work to support the efforts being made to find better ways of treating it, as well as to discuss fund-raising events. It’s also a useful meeting point where you can learn more about the various treatments available, by talking to members who are, or who have already been treated for Prostate Cancer.

(Note: If a suitable “prostate cancer” specific speaker cannot be booked, then we will endeavour, where possible, to book a local speaker who is willing to come along and give a presentation about local history and/or events that may also be of interest to our members).

Membership:
NEW Membership and Gift-Aid forms are now available to download – membership is £10 pa for an individual or £15 pa for a couple. If you are a tax payer, we can claim gift-aid back on your previous membership fees (up to when the charity started) but only *IF* you fill in and return the form !!

Cheques should be made payable to “CambsPSA”. Cash is also acceptable. Remember it’s £10 per person or £15 per couple for 12 calendar months (Jan-Dec).

These can be downloaded from here:

Membership form (PDF, 55kb)

Gift-Aid From (PDF, 57kb)

Note: We use these membership fees to contribute towards the costs of hiring the suitable premises for our meetings – any surplus is put into our account from which we pay for our general overheads (envelopes and consumables for our mailings) and to make donations to relevant groups, based on consensus from those present at our meetings.

+=+=+=+=+

If you can’t come along yourself but know someone you think may benefit from our guest speakers, please invite them along. It is an OPEN meeting – there is NO admittance charge – anyone can attend and all are welcome.

The first meeting (post-Covid) of CambsPSA, held on Saturday 25th Feb 2023, was a success !!
Our patron, Dr Hayley Whitaker, took time out of her weekend to support our group, along with Don (our Chairman) and Colin, Evelyn, Frank and John (committee members) and other members too.

It was decided that:
a) the new venue at Franklin Gardens would be a suitable venue to hold future meetings
b) future meetings would take place at this venue, from 2pm-5pm, on the FIRST Saturday of EACH month, starting in April 2023.

+=+=+=+=+

UPDATE: 14th January 2023

We are in the process of planning new social gatherings and support meetings during 2023.

We have now found a new venue, as the David Rayner Centre is no longer available to us during weekday evenings (as we used to hold meetings on the 4th Thursday each month from 7pm-9pm).

We want try this venue for perhaps the rest of 2023 and see if it is suitable for our members to get to.

We will announce dates for our next meetings on this page, and we will likely hold our AGM and get feedback about the new venue at our first meeting – plus we also need to see how many people can get to the venue…so, please bookmark this page and re-visit us to find out where and when our next meeting will take place.

Meetings for 2021 and 2022

ALL meetings in 2021 and 2022 were cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the issues relating to social gatherings…

We decided to re-commence meetings once Government restrictions were relaxed sufficiently AND it was deemed to be safe for members, speakers and guests to meet up.

However, members could check this website or or Facebook group to be advised about future plans once we could make the necessary arrangements to restart meetings.

Normally, our meetings started at 7pm and would normally finish by about 9pm. If there was time, we could also hold a raffle too.

UPDATE: As of Autumn 2022, many people are now vaccinated and having boosters, so, our hope is that meetings will restart soon.

We have previously met at the David Rayner Building at Scotsdales, Garden Centre in Great Shelford

+=+=+=+=+

Meetings for (early) 2021

All meetings (to date) were CANCELLED, as the David Rayner Centre became flooded in late 2020, requiring repair work to be carried out and hence no meetings could be held until it was repaired.

Govt restrictions then meant that no groups could hold meetings indoors for most of the year.

+=+=+=+=+

Meetings for 2020

Meets for October/November 2020 – CANCELLED due to issues with David Rayner Building, making it unavailable.

We apologise for the short notice but in the circumstances it comes down to the safety and health of members attending. In the meantime, please stay safe !

Title of Talk: “Cancer Research Demystified”

This month we had 2 guest speakers: Dr Hayley Pye and Dr Susan Heavey who came up from UCL, London to talk to us about what they do and for people to see/hear first hand from those who do the work that will benefit all those that are affected by cancer.

This was an also opportunity to see what is happening to the research money that is donated to ProstateUK and other organisations.

There was also a chance to ask questions about what is happening in the latest research and about the disease and how to stop it. People sometimes say that we do not have enough talks on Prostate Cancer. Well this was a chance to find out about what is going on and ask questions that you may have concerns about.

Thursday 23rd May – 7:00pm PROMPT
at: The Cambridge Cancer Help Centre

Meeting type: Guest Speaker

This month we had a guest speaker, Ann Mitchell whose topic is: St Nazaire “The Greatest Raid of All”.

Ann came and gave a talk to us about what happened in St Nazaire in the Second World War. Her father David Burney commanded one of the boats that took part in the raid. Sadly he did not come back .As many did not. VC’s where won and the whole thing happened in about one hour total. We were enthralled by her account as it was obviously very personal and at the end of the talk it was personal to us as well. We took home a bit of what is was like to have been there.

There is a new film coming out about the Raid . Ann and the few people that are left have been consulted about it. I will want to watch it as I think all those present at the talk will. It was a rare glimpse into our recent history on a level that surpasses TV and iplayer.

We take it for granted that we have the NHS and, in general, our health issues can be easily dealt with. But Prostate Cancer knows nothing about national boundaries and so, in the remote villages of Columbia, men can still get Prostate Cancer…but with little help available and few qualified consultants, never mind high quality hospitals, there’s few options for Columbian men who need treatment.

Thursday 25th February 2016 – 7:00pm PROMPT
at: The Cambridge Cancer Help Centre

Meeting type: Guest Speaker

Our guest speaker was Dr Keval Patel, from Cancer Research UK (Cambridge Institute) who spoke about: ‘Blood test for cancer’

Prostate Cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK affecting 50% of 50-year old men. Most men have indolent disease that would not limit their life span. Some however, have aggressive disease that will progress if not treated. Current monitoring methods e.g. blood tests or prostatic biopsies, are unable to distinguish accurately between indolent and aggressive disease. This is partly because, in the prostate gland of a single man, there can be multiple cancer foci.

Patients with cancer have mutations in their DNA and recent studies show that these mutations can be tracked non-invasively through simple blood tests (circulating tumour DNA or ctDNA). This project will investigate the ability of ctDNA to display and monitor the complexity of prostate cancer in men.

We hope that in the future ctDNA analysis could be used to non-invasively predict aggressive cancers and stratify men to early aggressive treatment to improve outcomes.”

Background:
Prof Thomas trained as a cancer doctor at the Royal Marsden Hospital and is now a Consultant Oncologist at the Primrose Oncology Unit, Bedford and Addenbrooke’s, Cambridge University Hospital Trusts, specialising in the treatment of breast, bowel and prostate cancer. He directs an active research unit, which has designed several UK studies, published 75 scientific papers and presented over 100 abstracts at international conferences. This included the UK’s largest prospective study evaluating how lifestyle factors can slow the rate of prostate cancer progression.

He was editorial member of; the NHS cancer plan; the NICE Committee on supportive care; the DoH funded working party on Complementary and Alternative Medicine; was commissioned by McMillan Cancer Support to write the evidence document for lifestyle and cancer for the National survivorship programme. He is chair of the MacMillan Cancer Relief exercise advisory group.

In most cases, each volunteer need only provide 2-4 hours “time” per week, although a minimum of 6 months commitment is usually required.

There is no upper age limit, but you do need to be older than 16.

You can find out more information about becoming a volunteer here:

It is great news that we have elected to use the facilities at the David Rayner building [ Cambridge cancer Help Centre ] based at Scotsdales garden centre.
This will be so much easier for parking, plus the building is spacious and purpose built for meetings Etc.

On Thursday evening starting at 18.30 on November the 24th the Cambridge Cancer Help Centre are holding its Christmas party. As this clashes with the PCSA meeting, at the last PCSA meeting it was agreed to combine both evenings into one, so no one misses out. Please come and if you can bring a plate of food. An enjoyable evening Im sure.
